What is a HomeAgain Microchip?
Dr. Birdsall exams a microchipped aussie that was adopted from a rescue group The “Home Again” is a safe, simple and permanent form of pet identification to immediately identify lost pets and quickly reunite them with their owners. The microchip is injected under your pet’s skin over the shoulders. Each chip contains a unique barcode (much like those seen on products in stores). The chip is gentle to the tissues, and does not cause a reaction to the body. When a scanner is passed over the pet, the bar code is read. The Pet Recovery Network will supply information on the pet with that barcode, and this service is available nationwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The owner is responsible for keeping information current with the Pet Recovery Network. All veterinary hospitals, shelters, and rescue groups have scanners.
Who: All dogs and cats
What: A sterile, rice-sized microchip is injected by a syringe under the skin between the shoulder blades. There is mild discomfort during the injection, and none after the injection.
When: The microchip can be implanted during any office visit. Due to the mild discomfort, it is often recommended to combine the implantation with a planned anesthesia, such as during a surgical or dental procedure.
Where: Hazel Ridge Veterinary Clinic provides the chip and implantation. The owner of the pet, and the Pet Recovery Unit HomeAgain database work together to keep information on the pet updated.

We realize that the Hazel Ridge Veterinary Clinic Microchip Identification System is not a medical procedure, but we support it and recommend it. We have personally seen animals returned to their owners by this system. Any stray animal brought to us is immediately scanned, and it is frustrating to us when there is no identification to be found. Or worse, the animal is microchipped but was never registered. Now this is all taken care of at the time of implantation. The system has been invaluable during times of disasters or stress such as fires, floods, thunderstorms, etc., and is responsible for recovering 3000 to 4000 pets each month nationwide.
