The holiday season is filled with sights, smells, and tastes of holiday delights. However, many of these items can be harmful to our pets. Many indoor pets are curious when there are new holiday decorations or plants. Place potentially dangerous items out of your pet’s reach whenever possible. The following items can cause your pet harm:

• Electrical cords
• Tinsel
• Ribbon
• Open flames (candles, etc)
• Artificial snow
• Holidays plants – can be toxic if eaten or chewed- poinsettias, holly berry, mistletoe

In addition, many festive foods can cause severe abdominal problems or even death for a pet. Foods that should be avoided include:

• Chocolate (alone or in cookies, brownies, etc)
• Raisins
• Onions
• Fatty foods
• Rich foods
• Alcoholic beverages
• Bones from turkey, ham, etc (bones can splinter and potentially cause intestinal blockage)

We know how much you love your pets and how you want them to feel extra love this holiday season. Consider treating them with their own veterinary approved pet treats or a favorite toy. Most pets want your time and companionship above all else. From all of us at Hazel Ridge Veterinary Clinic we wish you peace and wellness this holiday season.
