Content on this page has been provided by the IAMS company and the CVMA
Menu Foods is recalling 60 million containers of canned and foil pouch dog and cat food. The products involved include dog food sold under 50 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The recall includes the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food sold under several major pet food brands through major retailers including Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and PetSmart.
The recall occurred after reports of kidney failure and death in cats and dogs that had eaten the affected food. At this time the cause is unknown. Menu Foods reported that it manufactures dog and cat food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also the manufacturer for several top brands of dog and cat food.
For more information visit the Menu Foods recall web site at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/. The recalled products have the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197. Get more information on the Product Code on cans and pouches under the ER section of the It’s About Pets website at http://www.itsaboutpets.net.
What Should You Do?
Stop feeding canned or foil pouch wet dog or cat food until you check the list of potentially affected dog and cat foods on the Menu Foods web site. This is a very large recall involving many brands of food. Do not feed any of the brands listed on the web site until more information is available.
Check the Product Code of any canned or pouch food you have on hand. The foods in question were manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. If you suspect that your dog or cat has eaten the recalled food, you should:
- Contact your veterinarian for further information and recommendations
- Document product name and type of food
- Save packaging of open food with product code
- Save receipts with purchase location
- Document product consumption
- Type of food fed
- Dates and quantities of the food your pet ate
- Product code from container
- Report adverse reactions to the Food and Drug Administration at 888-INFO-FDA
Affected animals may show some or all of the following signs:
- Vomiting or diarrhea 1-12 hours after ingestion of food
- Excessive salivation
- Lethargy or weakness
- Increased urination or bloody urine
- Decreased appetite
- Increased thirst
- In later stages of kidney disease, your pet may stop drinking, eating and urinating.
If your pet is showing any of these or any other signs, call your veterinarian immediately.
